Born February 22nd, 1945, in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, William Oliver Swofford joined his first serious band while attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a football quarterback.
After college, he decided to give a music career a try and started singing professionally, dropping his first and last name to appear as simply Oliver. His first success came when he recorded a song called "Good Mornin' Starshine", from the 1968 Rock musical Hair.
Thanks in part to the exposure and controversy of the play, the song climbed to #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 and became one of the best selling records of that year.
