Francisco de Paula Santander: National Hero of Colombia
Francisco de Paula Santander was one of the leaders of the patriotic forces in the War of Independence of the Spanish colonies in America from 1810 to 1826.
In 1819, Santander became the commander-in-chief of the patriotic army. He participated alongside Simon Bolivar in the Battle of Boyacá and the liberation of Bogotá in 1819. From 1819 to 1828, he served as the vice president of Gran Colombia, effectively acting as the president during Bolivar's military campaigns.
Accusations and Exile
In September 1828, Santander was accused of conspiring against Bolivar and was sentenced to death.
